anti depressant medication for post natal depression?
i had prenatal depression before i gave birth 12 weeks ago which in turn has turned into post natal depression. My GP has put me on Citalopram tablets which dont appear to be working for me. As my mam put it i am high as a kite, almost hysterical, one day and need to be scraped off the ground the next. Is there anybody who is either qualified in this field or anybody who has been or is in this situation that can help me as i am trying to be the best mother and wife that i can but my state of mind is letting me down. Any helpful serious answers would be appreciated.

the best advice i can give you as someone who has been in your situation is to talk to your doctor. be completely open and honest. there is nothing wrong with admitting to having negative thoughts and feelings. lots of women go through the very same thing. i never said a word and because of it i feel like i missed out on my now-14-month-old’s early infancy because i was too busy feeling depressed all the time. talk to your doctor about getting put on something else.
if you are having extreme highs and lows which it sounds it there is another medication out there(sorry don’t know the name) but it works instantly ask your doctor about it he/she should know about it. what you are taking now can take up to 2-4 weeks to even start to work if it works at all, by the time frame you stated it sounds like you have been on it long enough to know it isn’t gonna work. I had some issues like yourself a few years back and the run of the mill stuff never really worked I saw a psychiatrist to help with the medication only per doctors orders and believe it or not Adderall worked wonders usually prescribed for ADHD it kept my moods on an even keel. GOOD LUCK & BEST WISHES
Hello there…I am not board-certified, however I have had a lot of experimentation with anti-depressants. I currently take Citaprolam (Celexa) as well, and thus far–this has helped me more than any other Serotin Selective Re-uptake Inhibitor (S.S.R.I.) out there…Citaprolam has the least side-effects also…However, many individuals are different. And it is possible that perhaps–antidepressant drug treatment may not even be the best alternative for what you are going through, as in individual.
The other anti-depressants, such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Effexor have been known to help depression, but come along with a lot of nasty side-effects, such as mania, sleeplessness, anxiety, and mental confusion…Cognitive-behavorial therapy is a type of alternative you could look into…There are many studies that I’ve read where changing your thought patterns can actually change, and re-shape your brain…There are some articles online that can really help, other than consulting your primary care physician…In which case–you could have him/her give you a referral to a psychotherapist, that can help you…
