Article by Steven Chang

Even though pregnancy often evokes overwhelming joy, it is also a stressful event for most women. For individuals whose fetus is at high risk of developing malformations and other hereditary diseases, the stress is increased. All through pregnancy, physiological and hormonal changes create a totally unique and often uncomfortable experience to a lot of mothers. Added to that, once pregnancy is nearing term, stress may be appreciably increased as anxiousness builds up regarding the end result of the pregnancy, baby care, and lifestyle changes that come right after delivery. Pregnancy is indeed a major stressor that can produce or even unmask depressive tendencies of some women.

* Depression is a mental disorder wherein the affected person presents with depressed mood, loss of interest to virtually anything including pleasure, feelings of low self-worth, disturbed rest, altered appetite, low energy and poor concentration.

* It isapproximated that 15 to 20% of pregnant women have psychological health issues, especially depressive signs or symptoms. Human hormones of pregnancy were once believed to shield females from despression symptoms, but recent findings proved it is not true. Hormones can also set off emotions that can make it more difficult to deal with despression symptoms.

* Most women with depressive symptoms tended to be younger ( less than 25 years old), single, African-American, with less education and have lesser family income. These folks are also more likely to have had prior pregnancies and a history of preterm deliveries and subfertility.

* Depressed expecting women are not properly identified and given sufficient attention. Even worse, a current study has proven that these under-recognized serious depressive indications in pregnant females are known to double the chance of preterm delivery (delivery before 37 weeks of completed gestation). Scientists are looking into the chance that despression symptoms in the course of pregnancy may affect the level of placental hormones, which in turn can trigger early contractions leading to the premature delivery of the fetus. 1

* Besides the risk of preterm delivery, depression during pregnancy could also put the mom and the child’s wellbeing at risk. If you are depressed, you may not eat healthy and balanced meals which your baby needs. You may lose interest in taking care of yourself, that may cause you to miss prenatal check-ups. You may also turn to smoking or drinking alcohol, which are unsafe to the baby.

* Amongst the many untoward effects mentioned between the medical professional and the expecting woman through the prenatal check-up, depression is one point that must not be skipped out. The health care provider and the pregnant woman should share equal responsibility in talking about depression in pregnancy because the earlier despression symptoms is diagnosed and identified, the less complicated it is to treat. Therapy options involve : 1. support from families and good friends 2. counseling which includes talking with family or seeking referral to a counselor 3. self-care guidance by the main care giver paying attention to diet, exercise, and rest.

* Medication is not the first line of remedy for this class of patients, since a lot of antidepressant medicines are teratogenic and can cause fetal malformations and limb defects.

Taking care of oneself when you’re pregnant is just as important as nurturing the baby in your womb.

postnatal depression can begin in pregnancy for some women. Besides, an important thing to note is that postnatal depression can occur at any time within the first year after the birth of a baby and can last for longer than a year if no help is seek and received. Therefore, do seek help before it worsen as untreated postnatal depression can lead to the breakdown of relationships with your partners or children.

Depression counseling is a form of treatment for this condition, as well as is medication. Studies have shown that the use of medication has become unnecessary as the patient learns to overcome depression with valuable tools provided by the given professional.

Depression can range from normal, mild “ups and downs” to severe depression that lasts a long time. Women are more than twice as likely to experience depression as men. When we feel lethargic and sad, our partners and children notice. This change in mood can affect our job performance as well.

Of course, people suffering from severe depression and anxiety should not just stop taking medicines or quit therapy and start exercising to cure their depression. But the benefits of exercising are enormous. According to the studies, if a person performs physical activities every day then the chances for the depressive symptoms to disappear are great.

Depression is a disease, a mental affliction. Getting the right depression treatment at the right time is vitally important. To someone suffering from depression, it is not only extremely stressful for the patient themselves but also people who are concern about them, especially their good friends and relatives.

It makes them feel useless and they avoid interacting with others because they are afraid of saying or doing something wrong that will get them negative attention. This condition tends to affect more women than it does men with about seventy percent of all cases reported being women. A person that suffers from atypical depression is more likely to have other disorders such as avoidant personality disorders, social phobias and panic attacks.

They then proposed the anti-stress component of tea, the theanine content, may explain the reduced depression findings. Theanine is an amino acid in green tea. It has the ability to penetrate the brain-blood barrier, which could cause increases in serotonin and dopamine; two compounds associated with improved mood and reduced stress.

Drug addiction often leads to a lot of distress, one is likely to have trouble with law and in relationships, hence an addict aggravates his depression by isolating himself from the society. Also, a lot of money goes into supporting an addiction, so more often than not a person gets into huge financial losses.

Manic depression is also commonly known as bipolar disease. It involves alternating mood swings that range from a high point known as mania, down to a low point known as depression. The reason that it is also known as bipolar disease is due to the mood swings from the high pole to the low pole.

These medications can sometimes be helpful. However, recent studies have shown that they are no more effective than placebo–meaning the act of taking the pill stimulates your own natural healing process. Anti-depressant medications also carry with them a host of unpleasant side effects.

Popular songs, poetry and literature often make reference to “the blues.” This is just the usual downcast mood that almost everyone goes through at some point in time. It is also called depression, although there is still a more serious state called clinical depression. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that every year in the United States some 20 million people aged 18 and above go through clinical depression. Clinical depression can also be experienced by teens below the age 18 and also by children, though. In times of crisis, such as the financial crunch that the country is suffering, it is not surprising that a lot of people become depressed. Ordinary and clinical depression alike can be prevented and even treated with the assistance of therapeutic massage. Reflexology massage therapy, Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, sports massage therapy and pregnancy massage therapy can all be used to lift the spirits of those who are depressed. These massage therapy modalities can be requested from therapeutic massage spas in Ramsey County, St. Paul MN.

Although there is a difference between ordinary depression and clinical depression, non-clinical depression should not be dismissed as totally harmless either. If not treated early and properly, ordinary depression could easily worsen and lead to clinical depression.

Clinical depression is much more than just feeling sad. It is in fact a serious illness that could be not just inconvenient but downright dangerous as well. Typically, clinical depressions brings feelings of anxiety and hopelessness accompanied by headaches, extreme fatigue even without strenuous exertion, problems related to sleep, loss of appetite and problems related to digestion. As clinical depressions increases in severity, the person may experience inability to function normally in daily routines. In some cases, the patient even attempts or commits suicide.

One of the physical causes of depression is the depletion of the levels of serotonin in the brain. This is why a lot of the prescribed anti-depressant medications work to increase the patient’s levels of serotonin. It is advised by experts from the Northwestern Health Sciences University, however, that natural methods be used to raise the body’s levels of serotonin. Among the methods they recommend are stress reduction, proper nutrition and massage therapy.

Serotonin levels are depleted by stress, and this triggers depression. Eliminating stress can therefore prevent or stop depression. One of the natural ways to eliminate stress is by practicing mindfulness. This can be done by focusing the mind on neither the bad experiences of the past or anxiety about the future but rather on the present moment alone. Ways of practicing mindfulness and focusing on the positive include meditation, yoga and tai chi.

Massage therapy is also a major means of eliminating stress. It also builds up a good appetite, thereby, facilitating good nutrition.

Depression can hit anyone any time. Even pregnant women are often depressed because of hormonal mood swings and massive bodily changes and discomforts. In such cases, pregnancy massage therapy would be a big help. People who are not pregnant can choose from among reflexology massage therapy, Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy and sports massage therapy as a means of preventing or addressing depression as well as a method of rest and relaxation. Whatever massage therapy modality is chosen, it is very important that it be performed only by a highly qualified and professionally trained certified massage therapist. This is the only way to ensure that proper therapeutic massage techniques are used and unwanted effects are avoided. A foolproof way of doing this would be to go to a reputable professional therapeutic massage spa in Ramsey County, St. Paul MN.

We were trying for a very long time for this baby, but when i became pregnant, my anxiety and black moods and mood swings have become unbearable.

I need serious help, i think i might suffer from Bipolar or a similar mental health disorder, my symptoms are gradually getting worse i feel out of control and it’s not fair on my family or this baby.

I understand there is no medication that i can take during pregnancy that is safe for my baby, but what other help can i get.

I just feel like a black cloud is surrounding me, i can’t feel happy or excited im Absolutely at my wits end.

Please can anyone offer me any kind words of advice?
Luka-

What i meant is yes there is antidepressants suitable for pregnancy, however i have tried them and it’s obvious now that my depression is more then likely bipolar, and the medication for this is a big no no during pregnancy.

My hubby and I have been married 4 years. We have no kids and have been trying for almost a year. He’s taking medicine for depression for PTSD/anxiety/epilepsy due to a severe head injury a couple of years ago. (Problems have stemmed from adding an anti-depressant recently.)

Anyhow, we’ve tried about 10 different medications, but each had the same side effect. ** TMI WARNING **He is able to get an erection but unable to ejaculate. I know it’s nothing else, because the problems start day 1 of taking the medicine. Then we would stop it, wait a week, and try another medicine. Same thing- first day, same problem. He is so hypersensitive to medications, and gets a lot of side affects.

I just lost my father, and my mother committed suicide in ’03 after a decade long battle with M.S. A baby would really fill a void inside of me and would complete our family. It’s been all I can think of for almost a year now.
Continued–

It’s hard not to be angry at him, but I know it’s not his fault. I just feel like it will never happen, and that is devastating to me. Has anyone been through this? How did you cope?

I appreciate any advice you have. I have been on Paxil for 4.5 years now. I began getting horrible panic attacks after the birth of my daughter, plus I was stressed as my now ex-husband lost his job and I learned he was doing drugs. I was on Paxil before my daughter was born(not during pregnancy) because I was having severe panic attacks. I had switched from Buspar, which made me feel like a complete zombie.
So when my daughter reached 3 months(she is now 4.5 years old), I began having those panic attacks again. My dr. put me on Paxil again, and I have been on it for over 4 years now. Good news, no panic attacks, but I feel like its not helping my depression. I am also on Welbutrin, 300 mg a day for depression and I was trying to quit smoking on it, which sadly, I did for awhile, then I am back on them. I still suffer from depression, and probably always will. Can a medication stop being effective after so long? Is there another depression med that I should try?

I’m 13 weeks pregnant and i have extreme migraines. I’ve always had migraines but since becoming pregnant i get it more often. My OBGYN prescribed me some medications. ON Sunday morning I went to fill my prescription along with my prenatal medication, and the pharmacist was very hesitant about given me the medication. He told me this medication is part of the FDA pregnancy risk Category C. There’s been reports of babies being born with physical abnormalities. Women who’ve taking this medication during their 3rd trimester have had infants who had seizures due to the withdrawal and they get ventilatory depression. He really didnt want me to take the medicine. I didn’t take it. I called my doctor today and he said it was fine. I don’t even know what to do. The medicine contains acetaminophen, butalbital and caffeine.

I’ve had a history of psychological problems (depression, suicide thoughts) in my early twenties, episodes that happened within a year or so. I got medical help and got better..

I’m 26 now and pregnant with my first child, and ever since the last trimester of pregnancy started, I haven’t been able to sleep well. During those bouts I also feel much moodier, sensitive and generally low. I know that both insomnia and mood swings are normal during pregnancy, but I’m worried that, given my background, they might trigger a postpartum relapse into depression.

I would like to avoid medication, and wouldn’t go to a psychiatrist unless absolutely necessary (my insurance doesn’t cover psychological help, and I have an unstable financial situation right now). Could you please give me some advice?

I have had anxiety and depression starting when I was about 16 years old. I’m now 21 and still have anxiety. I have to take medication to be able to function normally.
My boyfriend and I are going to start ttc in about 6 months or so. I’m going through and seeing all I need to do in order to be healthy for a pregnancy and am not sure what to do about my anxiety. As far as I’ve researched, anxiety medication is not safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. (I will also ask my doctor, but am curious what the women who went through this did)
Have you had anxiety before you got pregnant and had to deal with it during pregnancy? What did you do?

I’ve had depression for a very long time and i’m taking two different types of anitdepressants and an anti anxiety medication to try and cope with this pregnancy. The problem is, i have a daughter who just turned 1 and i wasn’t actually happy to have her in my life until she was 9 months old. We got pregnant very quickly when we decided to try again, which i wasn’t totally on board for in the first place. Honestly, we are an LDS family and we had the feeling that we should have another baby. So now i’m 11 weeks and i’ve been hoping for a miscarriage the entire time. i feel to awful about it because i know we are doing the right thing, but i’m very overwhelmed and i’m only 21. Is there anyone else who has felt this way because i feel crazy and guilty every day and i’m on every medication i’m allowed to take. I don’t know what to do. If anyone has any thoughts or has ever been in this situation, i would love to hear from you. Thanks!

Anyway, Was it dangerous for the baby to have stopped taking the medication? I read it can lead to losing the pregnancy…but you can’t believe everything you read.

I have bipolar disorder and OCD and I feel like it would be a big mistake to go off my meds. However I am 9 weeks pregnant and concerned about my baby. I currently take 60 mg of Prozac, 250 mg of lamictal and 2 mg of klonopin per day. I have tried to cut the lamictal back to 200mg and the klonopin to 1 mg. When I was pregnant with my first child I went off all meds exceptfor 20 mg of Prozac. This proved disastrous for my mental health. I really didn’t think I was going to make it. And the postpartum depression and anxiety was worse than hell even though they put me back on my medicine. The meds take a while to build up in your body and waiting for them to start working again was a nightmare. I wish I didn’t have mental illness and I wish I was able to cope without my meds but unfortunately I don’t see that as realistic. The chemicals coursing through my body when I am completely insane cannot be good for the baby. Is there anyone who took these medications during pregnancy and had their baby turn out fine without any birth defects?

Does anyone know if this medication is safe to use during pregnancy, or has anyone taken this while they have been pregnant? It does say to consult your G.P if trying to conceive, but some experience would be nice. Obviously, I don’t want to jeopardise the health of a baby if I do fall pregnant.

I am 11 days late today. I am never more than 2 days late. I have taken like 5 home pregnancy tests and they are negative. I am on prescription medication for pain, high blood pressure and depression. Can any of these effect a pregnancy test? Also when I was pregnant with my daughter who is 5 yrs old, I did not find out until I was 17 weeks pregnant. At the time I had took like 3 tests and they were all negative so I thought I was just stressed and that is why I was missing my period…well I started feeling bad and lo and behold I was 17 weeks pregnant. So is it possible that some women just dont “show” on home pregnancy tests?

In the start of my pregnancy, it was rough, because it was not expected, and it was hard for my boyfriend to accept. After a few weeks, I was happy about it, and he grew happy too. We went and bought little things here and there. My boyfriend is supportive & now is excited to find out the sex, and is taking part in my prenatal visits, and growing into ‘being a dad’.

Me, on the other hand…..

I have secretly started to feel worse and worse about the pregnancy. I haven’t really told anyone, except mention a little to a close friend. I am filled to the brim with fear and paranoia that because of my past and health issues I will have damaged my child and be a horrible parent… I just feel like everything is a mistake. I feel like I am confused to have my baby. I have thought of abortion, I am pro-choice, but I don’t believe in it for myself. I don’t know how I could live with myself. I have thought of adoption too, but my boyfriend would never agree, and I don’t know how I could live knowing I gave away my kid. I can only imagine how upset my family would be. My family is so happy I am pregnant!

I have done everything right, take my prenatals, go to my visits, eat right, keep informed, stopped cold turkey smoking, drinking and smoking weed, even though it was medical. I changed all my skin care and hair products and house cleaning products to safe organic stuff. I was obsessed with doing everything so perfect and healthy. I felt so happy to ‘be a mom’

I have suffered from depression all my life, on and off and have been on various medications on and off. I also suffer from seasonal depression as well, and some years I took anti-depressants through the fall and winter months . (I had wanted to try the light therapy, but all the side effects are things I already suffer from and to risk having more migraines, nausea, sleeping problems wasn’t worth it to me! + they can be costly)

I have not been taking medication for a while now, and was doing well. I’ve been reading different self help books & I had been going to a therapist & I thought it helped, but it has not I guess. I know some medications are supposedly ‘safe’ for pregnancy, but I don’t want to go that route, I don’t buy it, and do not even like taking the medication for myself in the first place.

Each day is harder. I don’t have any fun when I do anything, I can’t get out of bed. Sometimes I can’t bring myself to even work. Sometimes I sleep 18 hours a day.Sometimes I can’t sleep. I think about dieing, but I know I would never do it, because I really want to Iive, enjoy life and be a Mom! I feel ashamed to feel this way when so many others would be happy to in my shoes. I don’t know what to do….if therapy, reading, and medication isn’t working or not good for me, what am I supposed to do? Is this semi-normal/hormonal thing? Will it just pass?

I just want to be feel happy and bring my baby into the world wanted- with a happy mom.

I have been diagnosed with bipolar diorder and depression. I had been taking medications and kept my diorder under control for the past few years. Now I believe I am pregnant, and although it was not confirmed, my doctor advised my to begin lowering my doses as to stop my medication, for fear of hurting the baby. I am worried that without my medicine I may go back to being very depressed or in a state of mainia. I worry that something terrible may happen to me or my child unintentionally. I had a history of suicidal tendances before I began my medication. I intend on discussing this with my doctor and seeing what he advises, but I was just wondering if anyone else may have had the same psychological/medcial problem (just to ease my mind)
