Article by Jane Thurnell-Read

It is always important to take whatever steps you can to be healthy, but while you are pregnant it is even more important: not only do you need to take good care of yourself, you are also profoundly affecting the life of another person – your baby. Here’s 7 tips to help you along the way.

1.If you smoke, one of the most important things you can do is to stop smoking: babies born to mothers who smoke have a lower average birth weight, are more likely to be born prematurely, and are at greater risk of death from sudden infant death syndrome than babies of non-smokers. Sometimes mothers feel having a low birth weight baby could be an advantage as it will make the baby easy to deliver. This is not necessarily the case, as it may lead to an emergency delivery, which can result in all sorts of complications. Even if you are already pregnant, stopping smoking will benefit the baby for the rest of your pregnancy. It is not only the baby who benefits. You are likely to suffer from less morning sickness, experience fewer complications and have a more contented baby after the birth.

2. It is also important to pay attention to your diet. Many women feel they should ‘eat for two’, but research has shown that women only need an extra 200-300 calories a day while pregnant, and you may be eating those extra calories anyway. What is important is to ensure that you get the protein, vitamins and minerals necessary to build another human being. Those extra 200-300 calories should not be squandered on chocolate or crisps, but should be eaten as fruit, vegetables, etc. It is also important to increase your water intake, which will help avoid constipation.

3. It is generally a good idea to take a good quality multivitamin and mineral supplement too. There are now ones specially formulated for pregnant women. Ideally these should be started before you become pregnant, so that you are in the best shape possible for the pregnancy, and then continued throughout your pregnancy. An adequate supply of vitamins and minerals is important right from conception. For example, a deficiency of one of the B vitamins, folic acid, in the first month of pregnancy may lead to the baby being born with a cleft lip, congenital heart disease or spina bifida. Omega-3 fatty acids (obtained by eating oily fish, flaxseed oil, walnuts, spinach and spirulina, or taken as a supplement) are important for the development of the baby’s eyes and brain. Omega-3 also reduces the risk of premature birth and post-natal depression.

4. Nobody knows how much alcohol it is safe to consume during pregnancy, so many health experts feel it is better to avoid alcohol entirely for the sake of the baby. This can seem hard on the pregnant woman when everyone else is drinking, but it is important to remember that alcohol is a poison for the growing baby, and no caring mother willingly gives her baby poison.

5. Pregnancy is not a time to sit still. Although adequate rest is vitally important, most experts believe that healthy pregnant women should be taking 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day.

6. It is also important to minimise exposure to toxic chemicals while pregnant, so spending a lot of time painting the house and laying new carpets is not a good idea, especially in the early stages of pregnancy when the baby is particularly vulnerable.

7. Many women find pregnancy stressful, and this can be a particularly good time to turn to safe, non-invasive options such as Bach flower remedies, homeopathy, kinesiology and other therapies.

Making a new life is something miraculous. Doing the best you can for that new life starts long before you have the baby in your arms for the first time.

Pregnancy is considered to be a fulfillment among woman as it takes them into the stage of motherhood. Pregnancy can be a delicate process and it will require great preparation and caution. An expectant mother should be conscious on many harmful things or activities that may affect the pregnancy. Learning more about it is a responsible thing to do right before the 3rd month of pregnancy or even at very early stage.

Make sure that both parents will have knowledge about do’s and don’ts before, during and after pregnancy to prevent any harm to the mother and baby’s health. Here is the list of the things you must be aware of when wanting to get pregnant.

A couple who enjoys and shares intimate moments during love-making rather than an intercourse will highly help increase the chance of pregnancy.

After making love, the woman should stay lying down for a while to give way for the sperms to reach and swim up to the female cervix.

When following the ovulation process, it is best to have an intercourse at least 2-3 times a week when the ovulation is not predicted and have intercourse at least once a day in the days leading up to the ovulation.

Position can also contribute in helping the sperm cells reach the eggs. The closer to the cervix the greater chance of pregnancy. One of the known position is the ‘Missionary Position’ with a pillow under the woman’s hips, it places the sperm closer to the cervix.

The sperm count will not decrease or affected by the number of intercourse. The concern from refraining the intercourse can lower the possibilities of conceiving.

Wearing briefs for men does not affect or decrease their sperm count. Although, whirlpools and hot baths causes sperm to slow down and reduces the sperm count. If not avoided it can make getting pregnant harder.

It is a false information that cough medicine increase chances of conceiving.

The acidity of the vagina can be affected by douching as it alters the acid levels and washes away the cervical mucus necessary in transporting sperm.

Substances like artificial lubricants, vegetable oils and glycerin can harm and kill sperms.

The pH balance of the vagina can also be affected by vaginal sprays and scented tampons. Maintaining a balanced pH level in the vagina helps get a healthy pregnancy.

Stress, worries, frustration and other negative emotions highly affects the body to prepare for reproduction. Keep a positive atmosphere in the relationship in mind, heart. body and spirit.

Age, diet, physical, mental and emotional condition, lifestyle are factors that will highly affect pregnancy. It is very important to find awareness regarding the matter. The more you understand what you will or what you are going through, the more you will be able to take good care of yourself and the baby. Both mother and father will play vital roles before, during and after pregnancy to ensure a complete and holistic development of the baby.
Help Your Wife Manage Stress During Pregnancy

Do not think that stress management during pregnancy is the ordeal for the woman only. To look at the stressed face of the spouse is in itself the cause of stress. Though for the man, it is the mental stress only. For the woman it is the physical and mental stress combined together! Say, a new dimension to the family is in the process of growing. Therefore, it is a sweet, peculiar type of stress, full of anxiety and aspirations.

Your spouse is undergoing one of the novel, crucial experiences of her life. Her body has given the solace to the creative force of Nature which is working through her. At this time, what she needs is all out support, understanding and love.

Man, if you are capable of loving her, give her the utmost at this time. It would be great psychological boost for her. The woman, if she is pregnant for the first time, will have lots of anxieties about the level of pain during the delivery.

If pregnancy is at the advanced stage, the anxiety would increase by each passing day. The woman has to be strong physically as well as emotionally to face the final part of the pregnancy leading to the birth of the child.

From the psychological point of view, the family support is the best. It is not uncommon for the women to attend “birth classes”. Attending such classes is the first step for her psychological boost. The birthing coach will help your spouse with matters related to pregnancy and delivery.

Even before the third month of pregnancy, your spouse is expected to attend such classes. She will be taught the advantages of the better blood flow with oxygen and how the growing baby can get more nutrients. The company of classmates helps to raise the level of her confidence. At some stage of the classes, she would be taught the relaxation techniques.

Another important stress management tip for the pregnant woman is related to food. You need to be clear about her diet chart, the list of to be given and not to be given things. Bear in mind that she is eating for two individuals.

Regulating hormones is critical so that there is no mis-happening during the pregnancy. So, those fruits and vegetables that contribute to maintaining the levels of hormones, need to be given to her.

Her feelings need to be well-cared for, and even if there are some complications at any stage of the pregnancy, she should not be encouraged to take a grim view of the situation. If she knows the art of meditation, it is much better for toning down the little bits of stresses she is bound to have!

Give her the best in everything. For the best of both of you is going to arrive soon!

Article by Janet Hart

Sleeping and stress are important components of a healthy pregnancy; so is the way you live your life.

Sleep – You are going to need more sleep during your pregnancy and you should plan for that. Don’t try to stay up until midnight to get that report done. Just give in to the fatigue and allow yourself more rest, especially during your first trimester when you are likely to feel ‘bone tired’.

As your baby grows it may become difficult to find a comfortable sleep position. Most doctors recommend lying on your side with your knees bent and putting a pillow between your knees to take the strain off your lower back.

Lying on your side also makes things easier on your heart and lungs, and the baby’s weight and size will not be so likely to put pressure on your blood vessels, so your legs are less likely to swell.

Sleeping on your side also helps to reduce the likelihood of varicose veins, constipation and hemorrhoids because it allows for better circulation and provides optimum blood flow to your baby and the placenta.

If you sleep on your LEFT SIDE, you are also relieving the pressure the baby’s weight can put on your liver and improving blood supply to your kidneys so they can flush toxins out of your system.

Buy a few extra pillows and use them behind your back and under your stomach to give you more support.

Most stores carry full length ‘body pillows’, and even pregnancy pillows that are designed to support your body and your stomach.

Support and Ergonomics – If you sit a lot at work or during a commute or in a classroom, pay attention to the support you have for your back and legs during this time.

You will be sore and tired if your body is not supported appropriately.

Position your computer monitor so that the top of the screen is at or below your natural ‘eye level’ and elevate your feet on a stool, wastebasket or chair when you can.

Take a break every 30 minutes and walk around the office or down the hall to ask your co-worker a question. Keep moving to reduce swelling in your legs, ankles and feet and pain in your lower back.

Stress – Stress is a fact of life and it is unhealthy for everyone, but it is especially hard on you when you are pregnant and it is hard on your baby.

If your job, school or family life is stressful, if your schedule is crazy or if you are under a lot of pressure, you need to look for ways to reduce the stress.

You may have to stop working sooner if you can’t find solutions at work. If your stress comes from a long or intense commute to work, consider ways to change that commute by working at home a few days a week.

Talk to your employer and your co-workers and enlist their help during the time you are pregnant. You can return the favor after you deliver.

Let your family help you with things you can afford to delegate and allow yourself to be pampered. Be willing to let things go. You don’t have to vacuum every day. You can buy good take out food on occasion and ask your husband to do the laundry.

Reduce the hours you work or study and try to get more relaxation time and rest time in your schedule.

You will be better prepared for a healthy delivery if you look seriously at this issue.

Taking care of your cat – This is a great time to avoid cat litter. Pregnant women should NOT clean litter boxes, because of the risk of toxoplasmosis, spread through dirty cat litter.

Your baby may be born prematurely, suffer from poor growth or even have eye or brain damage if you are exposed to this toxic substance.

What makes this problem more serious is that you are likely to be symptom-free, while having passed toxoplasmosis to your child who child can then suffer from the effects of the toxin.

Watching your weight – You should (and will) gain weight during your pregnancy. Most of your weight gain will be during your third trimester. It is important to eat a balanced diet and exercise so that you do not gain excess weight that may hamper your recovery or your physical activity during or after pregnancy.

In general, your doctor will strive to limit your weight gain to:

o2-4 pounds total during the first trimestero3-4 pounds per month during the second and third trimesterso25-30 pounds for an average total weight gain during pregnancy**if you were underweight before pregnancy: 28-40 pounds total weight gain, if you were overweight before pregnancy: 15-25 pounds total weight gain

Your total weight gain during pregnancy averages 6-8 pounds in ‘baby weight’, with the rest consisting of water retention, amniotic fluid, placental sac, and increased breast and uterine weight.

Of course everyone is different and weight gain depends on your personal situation, your height and your starting weight, as well. Talk to your doctor about what is right for you.

Studies have shown that women who gain more than the total recommended during pregnancy, and who do not lose this weight within six months after birth are at high risk for obesity as long as ten years after delivery.

Your doctor will monitor your weight gain at every visit and talk to you about any concerns he may have in that regard.

In the interim if you wish to monitor your weight gain and compare it against ‘averages’, you can find more information at this website:

Sex during pregnancy – Sex and pregnancy go hand in hand. But many pregnant women often have questions about sex DURING pregnancy. And sometimes pregnant women are embarrassed to ask their doctor questions about this intimate subject.

You may be concerned about whether intercourse can cause miscarriage or pose a risk to your unborn child.

Presuming you have a normal pregnancy, there is no fear of complications or problems resulting from sexual intercourse during pregnancy.

Of course you should ask your doctor about your own situation, but the average woman can and will have sex well into her third trimester.

If you start to get uncomfortable in your third trimester and it is difficult for you to achieve or sustain certain positions because of your physical size, you and your partner may want to experiment with pillows for support, or try new positions to make you more comfortable.

We don’t recommend sex ‘toys’ during pregnancy because you don’t want to introduce anything foreign that may have germs or bacteria on the surface.

Talk to your doctor about your concerns and, if you want to do some research, take a look online to find out more information and answer your specific questions.

From your first week of pregnancy to your last week of pregnancy you should consider and attend to your diet, your exercise and physical activity and lifestyle issues.

You may find it necessary to be more cautious and cease certain activities like skydiving, but in general, your pregnancy is a time when you will feel excited, healthy and NORMAL, in that you can do most anything you could do before you were pregnant.

Remember to take good care of your health so that your baby is born healthy and your delivery goes smoothly.

About 50% to 90% of women experience nausea during pregnancy. It is a distressing condition that usually happens during the fourth to twelfth week of pregnancy. There is no known specific cause for pregnancy nausea. However, it has been suggested that change in hormone levels, low blood sugar levels and the woman’s increased sensitivity to smell are the main causes. Here are some suggestions of what to do when pregnancy nausea starts.

Avoid stress during the pregnancy. Stress can contribute to more hormone imbalance in the body resulting in more nausea. Do things that cheer you up and keep your mind busy.

Eat food in small amounts throughout the day. Also, eat foods which are rich in complex carbohydrates and protein. These take long to digest thus keeping the blood sugar levels balanced. Eating large amounts of food can cause the stomach to apply pressure on the womb. This usually causes a body reaction which involves nausea and vomiting.

In addition, eat even when you are not hungry. This will keep the stomach busy digesting food. Hunger triggers release of gastric acid which can cause nausea.

If some foods trigger nausea because of their smell, avoid them and substitute them with foods that don’t. These foods should however be rich in nutrients.

Ensure that you eat before going to bed and right before getting out of bed. This is important to keep blood sugar levels balanced. Also, consume foods rich in complex carbohydrates and protein.

Always ensure that you take your prenatal vitamins. These help keep your immunity high. In addition, deficiency of vitamin B6 has been attributed to pregnancy nausea. Get a check up to determine if you lack the vitamin. If so, the doctor will be able to prescribe some.

Nausea and vomiting dehydrates the body. Ensure you take in plenty of fluids during the day. If possible, drink fresh fruit juice which contains nutrients which are important for the babys development.

If the nausea and vomiting persist for the whole day, do not hesitate to get medical attention. There could be an underlying problem causing this.

There are some nausea remedies that have been used by pregnant women to help control it. They include taking ginger, wearing sea bracelets among others. Try some of these remedies and see if they work for you.

Finally, if you vomit, ensure that you brush off the taste. This sour taste can trigger another bout of vomiting.

The pregnancy nausea starts mostly around the fourth and ends at the twelfth week of pregnancy. It is normal to have the nausea and vomiting. However, it is better to try and keep what you eat in the stomach for the healthy development of the baby.

After the confirmation of pregnancy, there lies ahead a long path of thirty six weeks for the full development of a new life before it steps into a new world. Lots of physical and hormonal changes take place in the mother’s womb in these months helping in the proper development of the fetus. The mother also experiences several emotional and physical stresses due to sudden hormonal changes, the after effects of which may not be healthy to the baby in near future, sometimes leading to premature births and miscarriages.

Causes

Though not at all a healthy aspect, but anxiety and stress are common during pregnancy which needs to be controlled or minimized.

1. The fear of bringing up a baby in a new world puts a new would-be-mother under stress.

2. Sometimes the mother during pregnancy is under stressful situations like break up of marriage, physical abuse, infidelity and the negligence or indifference from the partners. Women don’t get the required psychological support and are under severe stress.

3. Too much work load can be stressful for the expecting mothers instead of sufficient rest and diet that are essential for delivering a healthy baby.

4. Many pregnant mothers are in constant worry for the developing fetus, seldom realizing that too much worrying can have adverse affects on the fetus as well as the baby in growing phase.

5. Over exposure to smoking and drinking can aggravate the stress levels in pregnancy.

Effects of stress during pregnancy-

1. When anybody is under stress there is a constant release of a stress hormone called Cortisol, excess amount of which, if it reaches the baby in the womb may result in high blood pressure of the child in future.

2. Due to high level of stress, the baby in the womb is exposed to lots of toxic and harmful chemicals which later are reflected in poor concentration, hyper activity and lack of self control in the growing stages of the future child.

3. Though it has not been clinically proved, but researches show that high stress levels in the pregnant mother is responsible for the children to suffer from asthma.

4. Stress during pregnancy can lead to asymmetry in co ordination of ears, fingers, feet, elbows and as a result the child shows low I.Q. levels.

It is the dream of every mother to deliver a healthy baby and to nurture him in the best possible ways. So why let worries dampen the dreams? Practicing yoga, breathing exercises, taking light and nutritious diet and trying to remain merry will beat all the stress paving the ways for a happy motherhood.

Whenever you learn that you have become pregnant, there could be a wide spectrum of emotions. You might feel: scared, happy, excited, and yes especially stress. So, how does stress during pregnancy affect your term? Truthfully it can have long-standing affects on your baby even after birth.

It can be almost impossible for you to be constantly happy during the entire term of your pregnancy, with hormones battling for your sanity and the feelings of responsibility for a new child. It’s totally fine to have a little case of the baby blues here and there, but always complaining on negative pieces of your life: (for example, finances or your problematic relationships) can only give you more cause for concern during pregnancy.

There is More to Keeping Healthy While Pregnant than Just Food!

Keeping your nutrition in check, and maintaining the health of your new baby are first and foremost on your list of priorities will make gigantic benefits for your newborn-inside & ouside the womb. Your child has a lot to lose or gain from your thoughts and feeling while you are pregnant.

Research has discovered that stress during pregnancy will translate into health problems for your baby later on.Stress during pregnancy can also affect your babys immune system, and also affects their birth weight.

Negative thoughs and low birth weight in newborns has been linked in research, and it also has the ability to alter your childs temperament and neurobehavioral development.

How Do I Stop Stress During Pregnancy?

You may not be able to trick yourself into feeling stress free, but here are my favorite two things that I learned to help relive my stress during pregnancy.

- Exercise. This may feel like more of a burden and stress inducer than release at first. But getting off your butt and going out for a good walk on a beautiful day or doing something active when you feel stress during pregnancy will release those endorphins and will help you feel much better by kicking away your stress during pregnancy.

-Meditation. Pick up a few CDs the next time you are out that help you relax and zone out. Meditation is a awesome way to hit pause on your life, and to really revel in the awesomeness of becoming a mommy. Enjoy the quiet moments while you have them, the little one will not give you any time to meditate once he arrives!

The first step would be reading what to eat when pregnant at http://reviewblogforyou.com/pregnancy-nutrition/what-to-eat-while-pregnant for tons more information about keeping you and your baby healthy and happy!

Studies have shown that stress during pregnancy affects not only the mother but also the baby. Yes, we all go through stress in a variety of situations; it’s inescapable. However, we can still find ways of controlling the effects of stress, and this is not rocket science. It does depend on your attitude during pregnancy and how you don’t allow stress to get the best of you. But you also have a few tested and safe ways of dealing with stress during pregnancy.

Fitness

You can bust stress during pregnancy with a regular fitness routine. There are plenty of exercises that are specifically designed to be used by pregnant women. And this doesn’t mean that you have to get enrolled in a gym – your exercise can be something as casual as dancing to your favorite tunes or going out for a walk with your husband. Apart from perking up your health and reducing stress levels, exercise also relaxes your tensed up muscles and makes you sleep better. Fitness activities help in the release of endorphins into the bloodstream and this makes you feel more relaxed and joyful.

Nutrition

See that you get a nutritious diet to keep stress symptoms at bay. Whatever the stage of your pregnancy, eating a healthy and safe diet is very important. In fact, your body will hit back with symptoms of stress or depression, if you don’t give it the right nutrition.

Making use of Stress Balls

You can also use stress balls to deal with stress symptoms. A stress ball is a flexible toy that is typically seven centimeters or less in diameter. For stress relief or exercise, the stress ball is compressed using the hand and controlled by the fingers. The principle of stress balls is that the concentration of the person is sidetracked from the actual stress source. In this way, the mind gets time to stabilize and relaxation ensues.

Finally, the most central way to decrease the stress is to shun trying to do all the work on your own at home. You can get some help from your hubby and also give some easy work to your older kids. In addition, you can get enrolled in prenatal classes that teach the various stress relaxation methods. All you have to do is try these techniques on a regular basis to keep stress at a distance.

The negative effect of stress on our health is well documented by years of research. Pregnancy can be a time of depression and symptoms, even when the baby is planned and very much wanted. Even though there has not been any perfect proof that normal stress can depressingly affect the baby, a high level of stress for a long-drawn-out period can be hazardous. Severe stress can cause issues like high blood pressure, which can put you and your baby at risk. However there are some fun activities and stress relief games that can relieve stress during pregnancy. Let us have a fast glance.

Swim

Swimming helps a pregnant woman by slackening the load she is carrying while in the water. During pregnancy, extra strain and stress are put on muscles; swimming takes away all the ensuing aches.

Play Puzzles

Try searching the internet for stress relief games and puzzles for moms-to-be. A variety of such games are offered, usually on sites that sell baby products and toys. You can find games on selecting baby names. And in some games, you can just input the features of mom and dad to find out how the baby might look like. You will also get parenting quizzes and a lot more to get rid of depression symptoms during pregnancy.

Dance

There is no reason why being pregnant should stop a lady from spending some time on a dance floor. Dancing is good for relieving depression symptoms. You should avoid the leap and jump moves; however, waltz or a two-step will give wonderful benefits to the heart and lungs while toning muscles. An immense benefit of this kind of exercise is it helps reduce blood sugar and fatigue too.

Online Flash Games

The web is filled with various online flash games which can help ease out your stress in the most practical ways possible during pregnancy. However, you should avoid all those violent video games that arrive filled with blood and gore. Instead you can go for something soft and serene.

Apart from games, there is a variety of activities to relieve depression symptoms during pregnancy. Some women relieve stress through exercise, such as prenatal yoga. The deep breathing and calm atmosphere is very relaxing. Other women find meditation or prayer to be effective for relieving stress. However, getting enough rest is important for relieving stress. So go to bed earlier at night and take a nap during the day to help you stay calm and focused.

This can be either a yes or no question. Does stress cause infertility? It is kind of a catch- 22 question. Underlying stress can contribute to infertility. And infertility can cause additional stress that may worsen the problem in the first place. Natural factors create stress as well, such as smoking, drinking and alcohol. And stress leads to lack of sex, a key ingredient in fertility! With the many factors that can cause infertility stress, it may not exactly put you in a loving kind of a mood.

Stress can affect both men and women. There is a link between infertility and stress. Some women just experience a large amount of stress: be it work related stress, due to relationships, or pregnancy stress. This makes it difficult to ovulate properly or as frequently as normal. Stress in men can also affect abnormal testosterone and sperm levels.

Some women have low stress levels naturally, or because it is part of the treatment and the surrounding environment. Tests have been performed to show these levels. Women were measured for stress when they were preparing for in vitro fertilization. When it is time to undergo in vitro fertilization, the women who are less stressed have a higher conception rates. This is one of the reasons acupuncture has become so popular in helping reduce stress levels for women undergoing fertility treatments.

A person can’t just turn off a switch to control their stress level; though it would be a great idea if that were possible. There are simple steps that can help reduce your stress. Infertility can be stressful enough without adding any additional stress to your life. No matter what treatments you are undergoing to try to become pregnant, you can ruin that by letting stress get the better of you. Just to think that you are spending all that money and time on becoming fertile, just to have it backfire due to stress that you may have been able to control would be an incredible waste.

If your stress becomes so bad, you can always try to do some easy, relaxing exercises that may be able to change that frown upside down. You may want to try the basics at first. Make sure you are getting the proper number of hours of sleep each night. Attending a yoga class a few times a week may be just the thing to relax your mind and body and reduce stress. Or how about trying meditation? This has been known to lower the pulse and breathing rate and this in turn reduces stress. You don’t even have to leave the house to practice simple meditation; you just have to find a quiet spot to quiet your mind and soul.

Spend time with your spouse, talking or just cuddling. All of your communication shouldn’t always revolve around trying to make a baby.

Lastly, you may want to seek the advice of a counselor; she may be able to guide you in a different direction, since medication at this point is not really an option.

Pregnancy is a gift that should be enjoyed by women unfortunately it is a struggle for most women. Eat healthy and watch your calorie intake to avoid excess weight. Consult your doctor and if you are of normal weight and height, follow the recommended 25-35 pounds weight gain throughout your pregnancy to avoid being overweight.

Staying in shape and looking good during pregnancy have health and emotional benefits.

The birth control pill has been a boon for women all over the world. It has given them the power to decide when they want to have children. Of course to have a baby, the woman needs to get off the pill. The oral contraceptive pills have to be discontinued when a woman or a couple want to conceive.

Whichever contraception pill the woman is taking will have detailed instructions on how to start and stop the use of the pill. You should follow the instructions carefully to increase the chances of having a pregnancy. You can also go to your family physician or midwife who can help you understand when to stop taking the pill. Follow instructions to make sure that you can conceive without any problem.

It was earlier believed that if you get pregnant before the second cycle after stopping the pill, you may be at a risk. Doctors believed that if you conceived right after you stopped taking the pill, you may be at higher risk of miscarriage. This theory is no longer valid.

But this is not the case any more. You can even get pregnant even before the first cycle is due. In that case, it can sometimes get difficult to pinpoint the due date of the child. When you quit taking the pills, it’s usually 4-6 weeks before you ovulate. It’s not necessary that the moment you quit taking the pill, you may conceive instantly. Sometimes it can take up to a year even for a normal healthy couple to conceive a child. It’s all a matter of timing. Sometimes even Mother Nature needs some help. Sometimes your doctor may also prescribe some fertility drugs for the couple to increase the chances of conceiving.

There are no side effects of the pill on the baby to come. However if you are planning to have a baby, then there are few precautions that you must take. If you are too thin or too fat, you may not be able to conceive. Therefore it’s advisable to keep a healthy weight. You should also stop taking drugs, stop smoking and drinking. All these factors have adverse effect on the baby. Those who continue to take drugs or are smokers (even passive smokers) have irritable babies. The babies may have low birth weight and may be susceptible to diseases. Their immune system may also suffer easily.

Stress may be another factor that affects the pregnancy. Stress can lead to more irritable babies. Therefore it’s advisable for mothers to be and pregnant women to keep their stress levels at check. It can lead to an increase in their heartbeat and can continue even after your stress levels have come down. This doesn’t mean that every time you are in stress, your baby will be affected; it’s just that extreme stress levels should be kept in check.

When you are sure that you have conceived, take a home pregnancy to check the results. After the results are positive, visit the gynecologist who would tell you about what to expect for the coming nine months.

Stress and anxieties are common factors that are very closely related to pregnancy. During pregnancy, lots of changes take place within the body due to the fluctuating hormonal levels. Added with excitement, fear and sometimes unwanted situations in personal life the stress levels are difficult to control, and too much of stress affects adversely the baby in the womb sometimes resulting in disasters. As the completion of the pregnancy nears, stress and worries will be following in series unless it is tackled efficiently from the beginning.

Yoga can do wonders!

Stress relieving drugs though are available in market, still gynecologists and obstetricians strictly prohibit the use of such drugs as these can have serious side effects leading to abnormal development of the fetus. Believe it or not researches and statistics have showed that yoga is the best medicine to relieve stress during pregnancy. But one should seriously carry on the yoga to get proven results till the baby is delivered. Basically four steps are followed in yoga –

1. Some mild stretching exercises are adopted for the smooth functioning of the reproductive organs and pelvic areas to ensure almost painless and smooth delivery without any complications.

2. Deep breathing exercises (Pranayama) increases the oxygen level in the blood improving the blood circulation and also providing energy and relaxing the mind, which helps in the better development of the baby in the womb.

3. Meditation helps in focusing the mind, helps the nerves to function in a coordinated manner releasing all tensions, stress. It soothes the nerves and prevents the production of harmful toxins. Meditation helps in maintaining the normal pulse rate. It helps to control emotions, develops self awareness and the bond with the baby in the womb. It even eases out the labor pains.

4. Relaxation is very essential throughout the pregnancy period. Pregnancy itself it very stressful and strenuous especially in the advanced stage. So few hours of relaxing mentally and physically, totally switching off from worries and anxieties helps one to get prepared to deliver the baby.

Yoga does not require too many procedures or tough techniques; neither extra effort nor investment is necessary. One just needs to fix a schedule time and a private secured place to carry on with the exercises. Obviously one must be cautious enough not to strain herself during pregnancy as it may result in unwanted complications. It is advisable to seek professional guidance in carrying out these exercises. One can join prenatal class to get the best advice from the experts and can also interact with other would be mothers.

Regular yoga and exercises can add glow and beauty in pregnancy too! So no use in worrying in pregnancy but it is the time to plan for a new nursery for the new member.
