Has anyone here taken or is taking antidepressants for anxiety during pregnancy?
I’ve been on medications for my anxiety for 2 years and just stopped taking them when I found out I was pregnant. My anxiety has come back and it is very extreme… I have not felt relaxed or calm ever since I stopped my meds. My doctor says its “safe” to take the meds during pregnancy , but I don’t know what to do?

Yes it is safe, i took paxel during my pregnancies, my doctor felt it was safer than stopping and going through withdrawels and extra stress. I have 4 healthy boys, one i didn’t take any with and there is no difference. There are some proven to be safe, IN FACT! i was going through alot of stress during my divorce with my first husband nad pregnant with my 2nd son and the doctor started me on Paxel.
It is safe.
I wanted to stop taking zoloft before trying to get pregnant, and succeeded. I wasn’t feeling right with that medication anyway. I felt numb to everything, even happiness, so I quit.
However, my doc told me that the consequences from quitting zoloft could be worse than anything that would effect the baby’s health……that if I got depressed and killed myself or the baby, then it would be a mistake to quit.
Of course, I got really down near the end of my pregnancy, and after the baby was born, but I kept an eye out for extreme symptoms. I don’t think my emotions were any stronger than any other hormonal pregnant woman.
It depends on what kind of meds you are taking, and how badly you think you need them. If you are a basket case without them, keep on taking them.
I feel better without zoloft. I experience sadness AND happiness now. With zoloft I experienced nothing. Flat.
Check the “Pregnancy Category” of the medicine you’re taking. It’s how the FDA rates the benefit/risk ration for all prescription medication. It goes A(absolute best but unheard of), B(some get this rating and I’d feel very safe taking it during pregnancy), C(benefit has to outweigh the risk), D(not advised) and X(absolutely not). You can find the rating if you look up your medicine on the internet and find the PI(prescribing info). If you want to email me, I can find it for you and tell you where it is….it’s usually under “Labratory Testing” section. I believe, Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft are all “B” but I cannot be sure. Good luck!
I WOULD DO SOME MORE SEARCH.I JUST SAW AN AD ON TV BY A LAWYER THAT WAS NAMING OFF A BUNCH OF ANTIDEPRESSANT THAT CAUSED BIRTH DEFECTS WHEN THEY WERE TAKEN WHILE PREGNANT. SOMETHING HAD TO HAPPEN FOR THEM TO PUT THAT AD ON TV! GOOD LUCK&BEST WISHES!
