I’ve had depression for 20 years and I made it through my pregnancy 3 months without my medication. Before I got pregnant I was taking zoloft but my doc gave me a rx of prozac 20 mg and Ive been taking that ever since. She said it would be better for the baby than zoloft. I was a little concerned it would effect my baby negatively but she is 3 months old breastfeeding and actually ahead on all of her milestones. In fact she’s already trying to talk and very alert!!!
I’m so glad I got back on medication because the hormones caused me to be on a downward spiral and I really needed it to be able to function!
I TOOK CELEXA.THER WILL ALWAYS BE RISKS..YOU JUST HAVE TO DICIDE WHEATHER OR NOT YOU CAN DO WITHOUT UNTILL THEN.I HAD TO TAKE MINES BECAUSE I WAS HARD TO GET ALONG WITH.MY BABY IS FINE
Almost all depression medications are category C which mean they have to potential to harm the baby. They are only recommended when the benefits outweigh the risks. However, some are safer than others. Celexa, Zoloft, and Prozac are considered by Mayo Clinic to be the safest, and Paxil is usually avoided. However, this is purely between you and your doctor to weigh the risks and rewards of the medications. I went off of mine during my pregnancy and while I breastfed. GOOD LUCK!
I was taking paxil after I had my son then I got pregnant again after a year and since that medication was not safe during pregnancy they swithced me to celexa and celexa is safe to take during pregnancy.
No medication is 100% safe for babies but you have to weigh up the odds between the side effects and your health i am on anti depressants and epilepsy medication as well i am terrified but if im not healthy my bub deffinately wont be so you have to look at what is best for both of you i managed to stay of all my medication up to 20 weeks so i did pretty well im on zoloft for the depression which is one of the safest ones causes me terrible side effects like feeling crap and not sleeping well but it keeps me sane and i can deal with everyday things and my 3 other kids i intend to come of the anti depressant a few weeks before i am due cause it can cause lung problems in the bub after birth and once she is born i will go straight back on a different one and not breastfeed i wasnt on any anti depressants during my last 3 pregnancy but i was on my epilepsy meds for my 3rd she was healthy except being very small only 5 pound 9 ounces. talk to your doctor they will know what is best
i take zoloft, 200 mgs a day, and when i asked my gyno she said the rate of problems is 1 in 100,000 from that medication. she said if i was worried about the small percent that she’d change it, but that it wasn’t enough to worry about and that the stress from not having medication would be worse. however i was taking it before i got pregnant. they will most likely start you on something lighter if it’s just for pregnancy, but stay away from paxil.
