Question by Jennifer: Anti-depressants that are safe during pregnancy?
I’ve been reading a lot about anti-depressants and pregnancy, most of which can be very harmful to the unborn baby. But some websites also say that there ARE some anti-depressants out there that are safe during pregnancy… I was just wondering if anyone knew what these anti-depressants that are safe during pregnancy are?!

I’ve had issues with depression since I was a little kid. Although I’m 23 now, I’ve never actually been on anything to help it. I’m 30 weeks and some odd days pregnant (almost 31 weeks). For the last 3 weeks or so, my depression has gotten really bad. I don’t really know why it’s gotten like this because there doesn’t seem to have been any kind of trigger for it. I’m sure that, at least to a certain extent, pregnancy hormones are probably having some effect on the actual depression. It’s just been hard to sleep or really function in my everyday life with my brain sabatoging me like this. I’m just curious if there are any anti-depressants that are fairly safe to use while pregnant.

I’d also like to point out that I have an appointment with my doctor on the 23rd, so I will be asking him about this as well.

I have had 7 pregnancies, 5 live births and 2 missed miscarriages in the second trimester. With my first 3 children I wasn’t on any anti-depressants, then with #4 I was and gave birth to a healthy baby. Pregnancy #5 was on them and miscarried, #6 on a different one, and gave birth to a healthy baby. Then was on a different one again and miscarried. The prescriptions I was on were Zoloft, Paxil, Welbutrin, and effexor…at different times. I am having trouble accepting that 2 miscarriages in second trimester is just a coinincedence….just wondering if anyone has any insight on these medications while pregnant. Doctors have had no problem prescribing them to me, infact have recommended them. But really I wonder how much have these drugs with pregnancy been studied? Any help would be great! Thanks! I would like to add to save some ignorant people time, yes I’m aware I have a large family. I have 4 kids from a previous marriage, which by the way I am still very good friends with my ex, and I have 1 with my husband now. I am deeply in love and only wish to have 1 more child with him. We have a wonderful family and my husband is great, he comes from a family of 9 kids and we both share the desire to have one more child together. I suffer from depression mostly while pregnant, so this is why this is an issue….Thank you:)

My anti-depressant ?instructions? stated to inform my doctor of a missed menstrual cycle… The last time I had sex was in July on the 23. I began taking my anti-depressants in September about the 8th or 15th. I had my period in July (the 24th) and also in August. If I missed September’s period, would it be more likely caused by my anti-depressants, or is there a possibility of pregnancy, even if I had last month’s period?
I just don’t understand why I would have had my period in August if I am pregnant?
Well I haven’t had sex in any way or form since July so I couldn’t have been pregnant after my August period.

Pregnancy an accident. I’m currently on Celexa and Wellbutrin.

I started taking anti-depressants about a month and a half ago and I am on birth control. I had an extremely short period last month and I haven’t started yet this month although I should have started by now. I took a pregnancy test that came back negative and I am wondering if my anti-depressant might be to blame.

Has anyone had any experience taking either wellbutrin or prozac during pregnancy? I am 19 weeks along and looking into these medications to help deal with a major depression. I have found many studies on prozac, but not as many on wellbutrin. Any input is welcome!

I was on 100mg sertraline before i fell pregnant, by doctor told me that no anti depressant is 100% safe during pregnancy but still advised me to stay on then throughout my pregnancy, i had to come of them as i was scared of harming the baby.

The past few weeks ive not been coping well at all, spoke to my midwife and she told me there are safe anti-depressants to take during pregnancy.

I’m just curious; if say I were to get pregnant now, & I’m on anti-depressants, (Prozac) how would that effect the fetus? I’ve always wondered & been scared I would have to have an abortion because it would complicate the pregnancy, cause birth defects, etc.
I’m not pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant; this is just out of curiosity & a “what if” because I am on medication.

I’m late on my period by over a week and last month I only got it for 2 days or so, but every home pregnancy test I take comes back negative. I’m on a new medication for depression and since it hasn’t been out long no one knows how it works with pregnant women. I don’t have insurance so I don’t want to go in to the ob/gyn unless I’m fairly certain I am pregnant. Does anyone know anything about this?
