Paxil, a widespread antidepressant has been connected to birth defects – particularly coronary heart conditions – in little ones whose mothers took the drug in their very first trimester of being pregnant. Considering the fact that of this acknowledged delivery defect chance, gals and doctors have been warned to sidestep Paxil for the period of being pregnant.

Paxil – known generically as paroxetine – was brought to market place by GlaxoSmithKline in 1992, and by 2006, Paxil was the fifth most-traditionally approved antidepressant in the US, with even more than 19.7 million prescriptions. Paxil is element of a course of antidepressants labeled as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs have an effect on serotonin ranges in the mind, a chemical neurotransmitter. In a healthier man or woman, serotonin is created in the mind on an ongoing foundation and in response to satisfaction-offering experiences.

In September 2005, the FDA and GlaxoSmithKline alerted medical practitioners about a new study on main birth defects observed in infants born to adult females who took the antidepressant Paxil in the to start with trimester of being pregnant. In the review – conducted by the drug maker – of much more than 3,500 pregnant girls, Paxil was connected to two times as quite a few principal birth defects as other antidepressants. Most of the birth defects looked at in the study had been coronary heart affiliated the most frequent coronary heart malformations ended up ventricular septal defects, which are holes in between the heart’s two chief pumping chambers. The FDA claimed GlaxoSmithKline would be updating the Paxil label’s precautions portion to consist of knowledge from this analyze.

In December 2005, the FDA once again declared that it was requiring GlaxoSmithKline to add added warnings about Paxil birth defects to the drug’s prescribing important information. At the exact same time, the FDA claimed it had also moved Paxil to a further pregnancy group. The FDA had beforehand classified the Paxil delivery defect chance as Group C (Hazard of Fetal Hurt Are unable to be Ruled Out). The new Paxil labeling now categorized the delivery defect hazard as Group D (Constructive Evidence of Fetal Chance).

The FDA took the action considering that the early outcome of two much more research demonstrated that women who took Paxil during the initially a few months of pregnancy had been about just one and a half to two periods as possible to have a child with a heart defect as adult females who received other antidepressants or females in the normal population. In basic, these kinds of defects ranged in severity from people that were minor and settled lacking procedure to people that created really serious warning signs and required to be fixed surgically.

Physicians have been suggested to go over the probable threat of delivery defects with sufferers using Paxil who method to grown to be pregnant or are in their foremost 3 months of being pregnant. Medical professionals have also been cautioned to have a look at discontinuing Paxil (and switching to one additional antidepressant if indicated) in these sufferers.

Females might need to be knowledgeable that Paxil will need to frequently not be taken during pregnancy. Women of all ages using Paxil who are pregnant or prepare to end up pregnant have to discuss to their physicians about the prospective pitfalls of using the drug for the duration of pregnancy. Then again, sufferers using Paxil need to not discontinue taking it without talking with their health practitioner.

Question by E: Would I be considered high risk for depression during pregnancy and after birth?
Not pregnant at the moment, but plan to try for a baby in the next few years to come, just as so many girls do.
I suffered from depression from the age of 12 and it got really severe age 13-16. I hated myself and self-harmed and let men abuse me because I didn’t think anyone wanted me anyway. I was bullied badly at one school I went to. I stopped going to school because of how people there made me feel and got into the wrong crowd – started smoking, drinking at 13 and then onto drugs at 14.
I fell pregnant when I was a few months off 15 and I couldn’t cope with the idea and tried to pretend it wasn’t happening. I then miscarried and still haven’t quite gotten over it 3 years later.
I got help from psychologists and a youth support scheme after a lot of effort into making them realise that them telling me they couldn’t help me due to money reasons even though they thought I needed it. I got into a really good school, restarted gcse’s and it changed my life because they understood me eventually and supported me through everything, including self-harm and breakdowns. Also having school work to focus on gave me something to be motivated about. I left school with 13 A*-B gcse’s which I am SO proud of myself for.
My depression hasn’t been so bad lately – amazingly due to simply being on a certain type contraceptive pill – apparently my hormone levels must have been pretty screwed. I had been on antidepressants when I was younger but stopped them abruptly and I’m determined to stay off them unless it’s crucially needed. I also got more chances to socialise by living away from home and where there were other young people and adults who were always willing to talk. Home stress was also a major factor to the depression.
So obviously, once I do choose to have a baby, being pregnant I wouldn’t be able to take the pill that has changed my moods.
So I’m worried I would end up getting bed with depression again. And it’s not in my nature to say I don’t want kids because whatever my age, I guess I could be at risk of depression during pregnancy and subsequently postnatal depression.
Do you think the doctor and a midwife would consider me as high risk for depression?

Best answer:

Answer by Elisabeth Musson
One of the risk factors for postnatal depression, is a history of depression. Pregnancy and early parenthood is a very stressful emotional time and you may find it more difficult to cope with it. Health professionals are very aware of postnatal depression and are trained to assess and support you. You would be asked questions about this when you first fall pregnant and if you need help and support, it would be very much available. If you do decide to have a baby, ensure you have a lot of support from family, friends and your partner. There is medication and self help techniques that can be used to help if you do become depressed. Good Luck.

Modern anti-depressant medications were first made available in 1987. Known as SSRIs – Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors – these are medications that are only available with a prescription. They were originally formulated to relieve both depression as well as anxiety disorders.

However, over the course of time doctors began to prescribe them for a wide variety of additional psychiatric and physical maladies. This conditions included alcoholism, bulimia nervosa, obesity, OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), and borderline personality disorder.

Many of today’s doctors prescribe SSRIs because they feel that they are safer, more effective and tolerated better than other drugs.

The SSRIs that are most prescribed by doctors include Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, and Lexapro.

Generally, SSRIs are relatively safe medications. Side effects, if any, usually aren’t dangerous. For the most part it’s rare for a doctor to discontinue or even reduce the dosage because of a patient’s negative reaction.

However, this is definitely not the case when expectant mothers take SSRIs during their pregnancy. This class of drug can actually pose considerable health risks for their unborn child.

A study involving SSRIs and pregnancy was published in 2006. After the study was published the FDA issued an advisory.

The study, can be found in the New England Journal of Medicine. It compared expectant women who had taken SSRIs during the last 4 ½ months of their pregnancy with women who either did not take any SSRIs during any time of their pregnancy or had discontinued taking them within the first 4 ½ months of being pregnant.

After the results were tallied the study disclosed that women who took SSRIs during the second half of their pregnancy had a 600% greater chance of delivering a baby with PPHN (Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn). PPHN is a life threatening condition. This often fatal condition affects a newborn’s capacity to breathe.

Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn restricts the flow of blood to an infant’s lungs and the quantity of oxygen that enters the baby’s bloodstream. It requires immediate attention because it usually results in severe respiratory failure.

In addition there were other complications that were not as severe in 20% to 30% of the babies that were born to women who had taken SSRIs during the latter part of their pregnancies.

In addition to SSRIs there are quite a few other medications that have been associated with serious birth traumas when they were taken during pregnancy.

If your baby suffered a birth injury because of medications that your doctor prescribed then you may be able to take legal action to fight for your child’s rights.

If you would like to seek justice on behalf of your child then you can take advantage of free consultation offered by an experienced birth injury lawyer.

Hello, I am now 32 weeks pregnant (planned). At about 28 weeks, anxiety kicked in with a few panic attacks and loss of sleep. I am on Ambien now (which is completely safe for baby) and it gets me through the nights. However, I am feeling anxious all day still. I feel like I need to constantly be busy because I get so anxious just sitting/lying down. I can’t just relax my mind. I have trouble napping or just enjoying peace and quiet. MY QUESTION IS: Will this pregnancy induced anxiety go away after the birth of the baby? I have heard that hormones can cause this, so will I go back to normal later, assuming I won’t be post-partum? Experience? Thoughts?
I am not necessarily anxious about the baby as much as anxious about anxiety and feeling wierd. I hate it. Hope that makes sense.

ok. my girlfriend just got on the shot about a month ago. we started having unprotected sex two weeks after. now she is experiencing symptoms of pregnancy but also side effects from the shot but they are both very similar. pregnancy symptoms she is having: stomach ache, nausea, throwing up, headaches, mood swings, very very sensitive, sometimes body aches. also her stomach makes noises which is really weird. anyways. side effects:change in sex drive, change in appetite or weight gain, depression, hair loss or increased hair on the face or body, headache, nausea, sore breasts. these are both closely related. i also read that the shot will throw off a home pregnancy test so i think the best thing to do is to get blood tested. i would like your opinion. pregnant or just symptoms?
the side effects listed are side effects from the shot. those are not the ones she is experiencing. the side effects she is having is listed under pregnancy symptoms.

I feel like I have no support hardly and I had issues prior to being pregnant mentally. I think I suffered from seasonal anxiety disorder. I am not going to commit suicide and might have considered it during pregnancy but am now past it, whether it is better or just pushed away, I’m not sure. Does anyone have any insight into this feeling or bluriness and just overall loss of appetite? Might I have depression or is it hormones?

I’m at the beginning of week 39 and we are still considering where to have our baby. I’m 29 years old, perfectly healthy, the baby is great too, weighs about 3 kilos and the pregnancy has so far been physiological with no problems whatsoever.
The dilemma is, we have 2 hospitals to choose from – one is a state hospital with a NICU but terrible conditions for the mothers – they actually still perform preventive episiotomies and women aren’t encouraged or allowed to give birth in any other position than the lithotomy (this is 21st century Slovakia)! I’m in depression just thinking about it
The other option is a state hospital in nearby Austria which is extremely baby- and mother-friendly, has great staff and they are willing to support me in every point of my birthplan. They are expensive almost beyond what we can afford (as I’m not insured in Austria, I’ll have to pay for everything) AND don’t have a NICU.
I feel that when I chose the medieval one, I’m doing the right thing for my baby, but I don’t know how big the risk is something goes wrong in this stage and he’ll actually need the NICU (it’s usually the premature babies who do, isn’t it?); on the other hand, I’m freaked out at the thought of the “treatment” I’ll get and the stress, pain and injury. If we choose Austria, I’ll feel irresponsible towards my baby, although the experience will undoubtedly be much more bearable for me and for him too (if everything goes allright).
What would you choose? Am Ia ctually putting the baby at real risk if I go to a hospital without a NICU? Or will the stress I’ll undoubtedly experience in the Slovak hospital be a sort of risk too? Thanks a lot for your opinions!
The transfer to an Austrian NICU and the care there would cost much (tens of thousands of dollars) and take long (it’s 50km).

I recently started taking birth control pills, within the first month I had unprotected sex (no pull out, or anything) I know you’re supposed to have a back up method, but we didn’t use one. It happened to be one of the days I was ovulating, about 14 dpo I started bleeding, a little late for implantation bleeding I thought. It started out brown but ended up as a light pink color and lasted about 5 days. I know birth control can effect your period so I wasn’t sure which it was. I’ve taken numerous pregnancy tests that came out negative, but i’ve also taken ovulation tests on days I should DEFINITELY be ovulating, and came out with negative, so it actually makes me question the tests? They were ordered from ebay, supposedly the kind they use in doctor’s offices.. I haven’t seen any dramatic side effects, I find myself getting tired, and irritable, but no frequent urination or breast tenderness. I’ve been having some extreme depression, and severe mood swings. Also, I don’t currently have medical insurance, so I’m unable to get a blood test done at this time.

Why do adoptees have a slightly higher incident of depression, Is there a connection to perinatal factors?

Was your child a low birth weight baby?

Does small birth weight and other perinatal factors affect risk of suicide? It appears to show up stronger in males.

http://bjp.rcpsych.org/cgi/content/full/bjprcpsych;179/5/450

“Foetal under nutrition predisposes men to depression in late adult life. If replicated, these results would suggest a neurodevelopmental aetiology of depression, possibly mediated by programming of the hypothalamic—pituitary—adrenal axis.”

The process of becoming a mother involves a certain amount of psychological strain for a pregnant woman. In fact, for some women, childbirth can be as traumatic as life-threatening events such as a natural disaster or a war. During pregnancy, it is important for the to-be mother’s family members and close ones to support her as required.

During childbirth, women are likely to experience a range of emotions, which may include:

•	Guilt

•	Anxiety and fear that can manifest as intense flashbacks and nightmares

•	Helplessness or a feeling of loss of control or feeling incomplete

•	Severe depression

•	Anger, irritability

•	Obsessive talking about their traumatic experiences

•	Ambivalent feelings toward the baby

•	Hyper-vigilance and hyper-sensitivity to any perceived injustice

•	Other symptoms such as drug and alcohol abuse, phobias, fainting spells, eating disorders, suicidal tendencies

•	It should be noted that such responses are natural reactions to a scary event, and are not signs of weakness. However, husbands can provide the necessary support to enable their spouses to cope with birth trauma.

During and before childbirth

• Medical care – Ensure that your spouse gets all the medical care she requires. Inform her about the available choices. Involve her in the decision-making process.

• Pain relief – Women experience intense physical and mental pain during childbirth. Use tried and tested techniques that aim to reduce this pain. For example, massages, baths, relaxation techniques may help.

• Emotional support – Often, women complain that people around them dismiss their problems. Sometimes, simply listening to your spouse may act as a solution. Remember that your spouse requires all the emotional support you can give her.

• Additional support – Counseling, antenatal classes, support organizations for birth trauma, etc. can really help.

After childbirth

• Providing care – After childbirth, adequate nutrition, exercise are necessary to ensure that your spouse is healthy.

• Sharing responsibility – Taking care of the newborn can be a difficult and tiring task. For some women, the child can be a reminder of their traumatic experiences. Your spouse needs some time away from her baby. Ensure that you or responsible family members are available to take care of the baby for at least some time.

• Counseling – Contact a health professional immediately if your spouse develops symptoms of a traumatic birth.
