Yoga can be an excellent way to reduce stress while you are pregnant. Many experts preach that practicing yoga in pregnancy should be a requirement for women. There are countless benefits to practicing yoga in pregnancy. If you are in good physical health and listen to your body, yoga can be a great asset in helping produce a healthy baby.

Labor can be extremely painful physically and mentally. By practicing the breathing techniques that yoga in pregnancy teaches you, you will have a much easier time relaxing. When you first go into labor, your body produces adrenaline from the excitement and anxiety. Adrenaline has been known to stop Oxytocin, which is the hormone that progresses your labor. By practicing yoga in pregnancy breathing, you can calm yourself down, block the adrenaline, and let the oxytocin flow.

Yoga in pregnancy will also teach you how to meditate. Practicing meditation takes some work. But once you get the hang of it, you can slow down your breathing and relax your heartbeat. This is beneficial to the baby during labor.

There are a few positions you need to avoid while practicing yoga in pregnancy. Back-bending poses can put unnecessary strain on your back. Also, when doing a forward bend, you are going to need to spread your legs farther apart, especially as you get farther along in your pregnancy.

As a general rule, when practicing yoga in pregnancy, do not lie on your back for too long, particularly after the 4th month. This slows down the blood flow to your legs and your heart, leading to dizziness, nausea, and hyperventilation. Some women can lie on their back and have no problems at all. Listen to your body. It will tell you what you can and can’t do with yoga in pregnancy.

There are some yoga poses you should not do, especially if you have never taken yoga before. For example, inversions should not be tried for the first time while pregnant. If you have been practicing yoga in pregnancy for a while, and your body is used to the position, you can perform inversions as long as your body will let you.

During the third trimester, you may feel somewhat off-balance. With having a larger stomach, yoga in pregnancy is more challenging. To avoid injury to yourself and your baby, try poses that have you balance on one foot against a wall. By doing so, you have more support and will be less likely to fall.

As long as you are not on bed rest or have no other ailments, yoga in pregnancy can be a great resource to help you through your pregnancy and delivery.

Going through the various Pregnancy Stages is a pleasure for each and every woman, since many believe pregnancy enhances her womanhood. Whenever a woman becomes pregnant, she becomes overwhelmed by the thought of bringing a new life to the world.

Pregnancy is the privilege of experiencing one of the best miracles of God. Watch and feel your little angel grow inside you, your fetus week by week, month by month, and wait eagerly for the day to hold a new life in your hands.

The Various Pregnancy StagesThe pregnancy stages, which tell you about the growth of your child, are in itself a memorable journey. But you need to know exactly what each trimester holds in store for you and your baby. • The first trimester which extends from 0-12 weeks will introduce several changes in your body. You will experience developments like nausea, fatigue, backaches, vomiting, mood swings, weight gain, and breast changes like tenderness, swelling, and enlargement. You may also experience increased heart rate, food cravings, leg cramps, frequency of urination, and more. But don’t you worry; these occurrences are just normal and not a cause of concern. In fact, to look at the brighter side, this first one of the three pregnancy stages will let you experience your child’s heartbeat, the formation of his/her face and various vital organs, and the wonder of experiencing the growth of your fetus week through week.• The second trimester will introduce new pains and new excitements during the 13-28 weeks of your pregnancy. The new pains may range from stretch marks, skin changes, protruding belly making your pregnant state visible, morning sickness, abdominal and lower back pain, increase in urination frequency due to the need to relieve pressure on the bladder, shortness of breath, difficulty in sleeping, itching, heartburn, constipation among others. The exciting part about this pregnant period is the growth of your child’s fingers, toes, eyelashes and eyebrows. You may even feel its movement around the fifth month. The end of this trimester is a happy ending as the heart, lungs and kidneys of the child have been formed.• And finally, the time you had been eagerly waiting for- the third trimester. This pregnancy stage is mostly spent in anxious anticipation. You will still be undergoing some distress though, in the form of heartburn, swelling (especially in the ankles, finger and face), feeling overheated, increase in basal metabolic rate, increased pressure on bladder, breast tenderness, weight gain, sleeping troubles, fatigue, Braxton hicks contradictions (false labour). Besides these, you will notice that coarse hair will grow at an increased rate on your arms, legs and face. This hair will disappear within six months of your child’s birth. In the third trimester, the baby continues to grow as it shifts into its birth position. The baby will move lower down the abdomen, thereby reducing the pressure and making it easier for you to breathe. Be positive and enjoy these pregnancy stages!

Pregnancy is the most beautiful phase in a woman’s life. This is the time when she goes to ocean of feelings. Mood swings is the most common thing in pregnancy because there are so many things which a woman has to face during her pregnancy. Happiness, irritation, pain, responsibility, etc. are few things which she will feel. Along with this she has to take lots of care during the pregnancy. Good food along with proper exercise will make her baby strong and keep her healthy during the phase.

It is very important to stay be active during pregnancy. Normally, doctors also suggest a pregnant lady to do few exercises which are good for the mother as well as the baby. Yoga is something which is preferred at the most during pregnancy. There are lots of benefits that a woman will avail by practicing yoga asanas in pregnancy. But there are few specific exercises only which are good for pregnant women. There are few yoga asanas in pregnancy which can be very hazardous for the baby and the mother. Some of the exercises which a woman should avoid during her pregnancy are mentioned below.

A pregnant woman should avoid exercises with inversion pose in yoga. Exercises like headstands or in this case upward bow are just not for women who are pregnant. Camel pose is very hazardous along with camel pose. Downward dog pose should not be preferred by a woman during her pregnancy.

Yoga asanas in pregnancy should be done very carefully. Balancing is one thing which should be avoided strictly during pregnancy. A tiny misbalance can lead to major complications during the pregnancy. So any exercise which needs balancing is not good during pregnancy. It will increase the risk of falling down or may also lead to miscarriage of the baby.

Yoga asanas in pregnancy should be chosen which are simple to do without much of twisting and turning. Twisting the body is not possible in pregnancy. Experts will also not suggest you exercise which includes lying on the floor. It might hurt the baby in many cases.

These are certain types of yoga asanas in pregnancy which should be avoided. During pregnancy all the exercises are done in standing position only. Also it is important to perform all exercises slowly with proper and deep breathing. Therefore a woman has to be very careful while performing yoga asanas in pregnancy.

Are you an expecting mother or father and want to know more about more about conception to the lateral changes of pregnancy cycle? Quench your thirst here and relax.

Pregnancy could be termed as a symbol of existence. When the female gamete merges with the male gamete, pregnancy dawns in. This happens with all the female species present on the earth.

Or we can say that pregnancy is referred to the state when female body is carrying one or even more offspring in the uterus. The offspring is known as an embryo or fetus. The pregnancy period spans from conception to childbirth and lasts for 40 weeks.

As fertilization occurs 14 days prior to the expected missed period and in previously normal cycle of 28 days duration, it is about 14 days after the first day of the period. Thus, the true gestation period is to be calculated by subtracting 14 days from 280 days i.e. 266 days. This is called fertilization or ovulate age.

Women who want to become pregnant must keep a check on ovulation. For that very purpose, many online tools such as an ovulation calendar have come to the front. Get advice on having a healthy pregnancy, find out what’s going on with your own body, and receive tips on getting ready for baby. The duration of pregnancy is calculated by doctors as 10 lunar months or 9 calendar months and 7 days or 280 days or 40 weeks calculated from first day of the last menstrual period. This is called menstrual or gestational age of pregnancy.

A Pregnancy Calendar can be used to follow your baby’s development from conception to birth. The Pregnancy Calendar is divided into three trimesters-

I. First trimester (0-12 weeks)II. Second trimester (13-28 weeks) III. Third trimester/last trimester (29-40 weeks)

All the three trimesters of pregnancy calendar bring various physical and mental changes in an expecting mother to give conclusive evidence of pregnancy. When these amazing changes and experiences, a mother is blessed with the wonderful gift of God to her in the shape of a newly born baby!

Important Pregnancy Symptoms

Some common symptoms in first trimester are morning sickness, constipation, and mood swings. The second trimester includes weight gain and swelling of feet. The third semester shows movement of fetus even from outside.

There happen to be various pregnancy stages. It’s better to know all the stages because different precautions need to be taken in various stages of it. This takes place after a sexual intercourse between the opposite sexes of the same specie. The same happens with the human beings, too. However, there are other options of child birth with the facilitation of medical science, as well. This must be handled with prudent care.

Some Not-to-be-neglected Pregnancy Symptoms

The pregnancy symptoms not to be ignored are severe headaches that last for a long duration, fever which is not from flu or cold symptoms, severe vomiting, light or heavy bleeding, and burning feeling while urinating.

The joyful time of pregnancy demands immense care of every expecting woman.

Article by Kate Codrington

In most massage trainings, the guideline to students is not to massage a woman in the first three months of pregnancy. The reason usually given is that in the first trimester, the risk of miscarriage is too high, but can massage given by a responsible therapist really provoke miscarriage? Should we stop seeing a client when she tells us she’s conceived even though this is probably when she is most in need of support?

I am curious as to why there’s so much fear around massage and pregnancy in the first trimester and interested in examining what happens within the woman and foetus during this period, the actual risks around miscarriage, and what sort of massage might be appropriate.

Changes in the motherThe first three months of a pregnancy is an incredible time of change; from a single cell, the baby becomes a recognisably human creature measuring 5cm long. Giving a brief outline of the physiological changes during this period will make clear what sort of work is useful. Once the egg is fertilised oestrogen and progesterone levels rise, causing intense pre-menstrual symptoms. In addition there maybe breast tenderness, heightened emotions, nausea and more frequent urination. Relaxin levels are high to soften the ligaments in preparation to carry the extra weight and enable the birth. The ribs begin to flare as lungs and heart become larger and blood volume increases. The progesterone affects digestion and there may be nausea, wind or constipation. Above all, not surprisingly given how much internal change she’s undergoing, most women experience extreme tiredness. This is an emotionally challenging time too, with worries about miscarriage, the baby’s well-being, and fears about how it might be to have a new person in the family. The woman’s identity is also on the change as she takes on motherhood and all that it means to her.

Changes in the babyThe foetus also makes an incredible journey during this time. Once sperm and egg fuse, the single cell starts to divide while travelling down the fallopian tube to embed in the womb. In the second month limb buds and facial features begin to appear and bones begin to form and a heart beat will be visible by scan. By the third month, the organs are fully formed and will mature over the rest of the pregnancy, she can be seen to archher body and move her lips as she starts to practice sucking.

MassageRegarding the massage itself, every woman will come with different needs, so as always we should be guided by her process in the moment rather than her symptom; you may not alter your work so much, but be guided by what she presents from session to session. As there is so much change during this period, and tiredness, nausea and anxiety are common, touch that will help to stabilise and confirm is helpful. The following is a general guideline as to what might be useful:

Matter of fact intentionUsing a ‘matter of fact’ touch can be very calming. This would include tangible elements such as speed, direction and depth as well as internal attitude and the quality of relating. The contact would be on the muscle sheath, the rhythm a little like the music that introduces the shipping forecast ‘Sailing By’. The internal attitude would include an awareness of where our boundaries meet and holding a reassuring thought of ‘you’re OK’. This should help work towards a sense of containment for the client, while avoiding provoking more up-drift.

HoldingIn this technique the therapist uses full hand contact, placing her palms on the client’s body for a few breath cycles and moving to the next position on the out-breath. This can be focussed on any level that feels appropriate; bone, muscle, skin or aura. The intention is to contain, give boundaries and reassurance.

Membrane MassageThis works on the muscle membrane, the therapist uses the pads of her fingers to move the membrane over the muscle in a soothing waltz rhythm. The intention is to integrate, digest and ground.

Muscle holdingThis is as much technique as intention, using the whole hand to gently grasp the muscle and moving slightly away from the bone, towards the periphery. The intention is to put the client in contact with the strength in her muscles and by association her inner strength: ‘I can cope!’, ‘I can do it!’.

PackingThis is a refinement of holding in the aura and uses a patting motion to confirm and seal energetic boundaries, usually done around four inches from the body or where the temperature/sensation in the hands changes.

GroundingBy which I mean any sort of massage or exercise to encourage the energy into the legs and feet. This could be energetic holding, muscle holding, gentle stretches or rotations.

Working to client’s boundaryThis can help foster a feeling of safety for the client. It requires very slow, sensitive movement; for example, when doing shoulder rotations, sensing where the resistance is and stopping at that edge, then working gently by trying to avoid triggering resistance. It can also be done verbally by acknowledging the holding to the client.

AbdomenHelping the energy to settle in the abdomen is good, some women like energetic holding here or on the lower back, though it’s always worthwhile checking to see what feels OK.

Giving spaceA vital part of the work at this time is to give the woman space to experience how she is in this new place; pregnancy brings with it a particular softness and permeability which makes the influence of the outside world and the rush of her internal life especially overwhelming, and it is easy for women to lose touch with themselves. This would include space to talk about herself, space to feel her body and to experience her feelings.

Connecting with babyWork can also start to make a connection with the baby. As movement isn’t usually felt until 20 weeks or so, this would be in the form of focussing attention, breathing or visualisation. In Chinese and Japanese traditions there is a meridian that connects the heart to the uterus known as Bao mai; this meridian can be tremendously grounding as it provides a link between fire and earth elements. It can be brought into awareness by touch e.g. palming, breathing meditation or visualisation.

Massage styles to avoidThe mother and baby’s systems are in such a state of flux at this time, work that creates more change and upheaval are to be avoided. This would include vigorous or provocative techniques, particularly on the lower back which might be uncomfortable. As Relaxin levels are high to soften the tendons, strong stretches should be made with a great deal of care, if at all. Lymphatic work is also best avoided at this time as the release of toxins can unsettle the delicate hormonal balance. Stretches, opening work and emptying in the groin area might be best avoided early in pregnancy. The main guideline as with all sorts of massage is for our clients to listen to their bodies and give feedback to the therapist. But as in the rest of our practice we should be guided by our own boundaries to show us what we are willing to work with.

Fear of miscarriageFrom my own experience of pregnancy and from working with pregnant women, I have observed that there is a lot of unexpressed anxiety about pregnancy both in women themselves and in our society. Expecting a baby is usually (though not always) a joyful prospect, but we are not good at allowing our fears a voice. Probably as a consequence of this, we are bombarded with often contradictory advice about what might harm the baby. The first trimester is the period when there is most risk of miscarriage with about one in four pregnancies ending this way. It can be a lonely, painful experience and the grieving process needs time and space. Most women who have suffered a miscarriage never find out exactly what the cause was, and it can be very hard to accept that there was nothing they could have done to change the outcome. Listed below are the five common causes of miscarriage:

1. A genetic abnormality is the most common cause of about 50% of miscarriages; the baby does not develop normally from the start and cannot survive; however subsequent pregnancies need not be affected.

 2. An imbalance in pregnancy hormones can cause conditions such as polycystic ovaries and irregular periods which can cause miscarriage. There are treatments available for hormonal imbalance.

 3. Structural problems such as a weak cervix, abnormally shaped uterus or large fibroids.

 4. Infection can impact pregnancy, not coughs and colds but a very high temperature, and infections of the blood such as hepatitis, toxoplasmosis andgerman measles.

 5. Blood clotting disorders can affect the flow of blood to the placenta which in turn would deprive the baby of oxygen and nutrients.

It is hard to see how massage can affect any of the above conditions, and it has never been shown as a cause of miscarriage. Like moderate exercise, massage can make a great contribution to the well-being of both mother and baby.

ContraindicationsThere are some instances when massage is not recommended. If a client reports any of the following events she should ask her mid-wife or doctor for advice: Vaginal bleeding (often occurs in a normal pregnancy that is brought to term) Pelvic cramps Abdominal pain Dull ache in lower back Clot-like fluid or tissue from the vagina Fever, weakness

My conclusion is that therapists shy away from massaging women early in pregnancy not because the massage itself may damage, but because miscarriage, as common as it is, is a bereavement and a profound loss that many women continue to feel for the rest of their lives and we are afraid of coming into contact with this loss. Also therapists are afraid of contributing to a miscarriage, or of being seen to have caused one, and just notknowing if this was the case. It is understandable that many professionals choose to work with pregnancy when it enters a more stable phase, but early pregnancy is such a vulnerable period, surely these women would benefit from more support rather than less.

Question by E: Would I be considered high risk for depression during pregnancy and after birth?
Not pregnant at the moment, but plan to try for a baby in the next few years to come, just as so many girls do.
I suffered from depression from the age of 12 and it got really severe age 13-16. I hated myself and self-harmed and let men abuse me because I didn’t think anyone wanted me anyway. I was bullied badly at one school I went to. I stopped going to school because of how people there made me feel and got into the wrong crowd – started smoking, drinking at 13 and then onto drugs at 14.
I fell pregnant when I was a few months off 15 and I couldn’t cope with the idea and tried to pretend it wasn’t happening. I then miscarried and still haven’t quite gotten over it 3 years later.
I got help from psychologists and a youth support scheme after a lot of effort into making them realise that them telling me they couldn’t help me due to money reasons even though they thought I needed it. I got into a really good school, restarted gcse’s and it changed my life because they understood me eventually and supported me through everything, including self-harm and breakdowns. Also having school work to focus on gave me something to be motivated about. I left school with 13 A*-B gcse’s which I am SO proud of myself for.
My depression hasn’t been so bad lately – amazingly due to simply being on a certain type contraceptive pill – apparently my hormone levels must have been pretty screwed. I had been on antidepressants when I was younger but stopped them abruptly and I’m determined to stay off them unless it’s crucially needed. I also got more chances to socialise by living away from home and where there were other young people and adults who were always willing to talk. Home stress was also a major factor to the depression.
So obviously, once I do choose to have a baby, being pregnant I wouldn’t be able to take the pill that has changed my moods.
So I’m worried I would end up getting bed with depression again. And it’s not in my nature to say I don’t want kids because whatever my age, I guess I could be at risk of depression during pregnancy and subsequently postnatal depression.
Do you think the doctor and a midwife would consider me as high risk for depression?

Best answer:

Answer by Elisabeth Musson
One of the risk factors for postnatal depression, is a history of depression. Pregnancy and early parenthood is a very stressful emotional time and you may find it more difficult to cope with it. Health professionals are very aware of postnatal depression and are trained to assess and support you. You would be asked questions about this when you first fall pregnant and if you need help and support, it would be very much available. If you do decide to have a baby, ensure you have a lot of support from family, friends and your partner. There is medication and self help techniques that can be used to help if you do become depressed. Good Luck.

The first few months of pregnancy are very important to the development of the baby. I do activities that before getting pregnant made feel good, like watching comedies, listening to music. I am still very anxious. Does the mood change in the latter months?

Best answer:

Answer by cheerful
So, what’s the real question here? Are you saying that activities you have done before you were pregnant now makes you feel anxious? I have severe anxiety and, before I became pregnant, was prescribed to an anxiety medication. Now that I’m pregnant I cannot take them. My anxiety gets terrible at times. I would suggest sitting down with a book, taking a warm bath (not too long!), getting fresh air outdoors, lighting a few candles, taking slow deep breaths, or pamper yourself. For severe anxiety or anxiety attacks, you should go to the hospital.
