<html >

Pregnancy and birth are two life-changing events that are bound
to bring out both the best and worse in any woman. Some women report
being more cheerful and patient, while others are as grouchy as a
grizzly bear. One thing is for certain- most women experience moods
swings that are equivalent to a roller coaster ride during pregnancy and
during the initial months after birth!

These mood changes are caused by the hormonal changes in your body
during this crucial phrase. Your body starts producing more progesterone
and oestrogen, two hormones that helps develop your growing foetus and
gives you a healthy pregnancy.

However, the extra doses of these hormones can interfere with your
feelings – one minute you may be smiling and cheerful, and the next
minute you may be shouting or snapping at everyone around. You will find
yourself easily irritated, for instance, when the air-conditioner
temperature rises, the phone line doesn’t work or when your husband
turns up a few minutes late.

Apart from the hormonal changes, you may also have problems with
nausea, fatigue, backaches. Coupled with fears about your impending
birth, whether becoming a mother will affect your career and how you
will need to change your lifestyle, there is little wonder that you feel
more jittery than usual!

The good news is that your emotional turbulence usually gets better
once baby is born. You’ll be your usual lovable self again once you and
baby have settled down to a comfortable routine of feeding, bathing,
nappy-changing, sleeping and playing (not necessarily in that order!).

The tough part is that your family, mainly your spouse and other
children will have to endure your mood changes! Although you can rightly
say it’s the hormones that are turning you into a moody monster, it can
be hard for them to understand especially if they have not been through
it before.

Fortunately there are ways to help regulate the mood swings so that they don’t get out of control. Try these tips:

IF YOU HAVE SMALL CHILDREN, you might find it
tiring having to take care of them and your pregnant self. Get help from
your spouse or domestic helper, first by explaining that your pregnancy
is making it difficult for you to cope with your usual duties.
WITH OLDER CHILDREN, explain why you are unable to
join them for sports or other strenuous activities like before and
promise that you will make up for lost time once baby comes.
WHEN YOU FEEL RISING ANGER, retreat from the room
and take some deep breaths to calm down. This works well whether you’re
at home, at the office or at your in-law’s house!
GET ENOUGH REST AND SLEEP to lessen the mood
swings. If your backaches makes it difficult for you to fall asleep, get
your spouse for a gentle back rub. Taking a glass of milk also helps
you sleep better.
LEARN RELAXATION EXERCISES such as meditation and
visualization. Imagine bringing baby home, with everyone happily waiting
for your arrival, ooh-in and aah-ing when they see your bundle joy.
AT WORK, your sudden (and sometimes irrational)
outbursts might annoy and startle your colleagues or staff. Make it a
point to apologise later when you’ve calmed down so that they won’t take
your outbursts personally.
SLOW DOWN if you have a hectic lifestyle. Take time
off work or delegate so that you can have more time for yourself.
Listen to some relaxing music, read a book or take a slow leisurely walk
when you feel your nerves being wrangled.
TAKE A WARM SHOWER at night before bedtime to relax but avoid long hot baths that can be harmful for your baby.
MAKE TIME TO EXERCISE as it helps build stamina for
the labour process later. Exercise also releases feel-good hormones
called endorphins, which helps regulate mood and makes you a glowing,
not a growling mommy!
WATCH YOUR DIET by avoiding caffeinated drinks and
foods that are high in sugar and monosodium glutamate (MSG), as they
tend to make you feel more tense.
TAKE REGULAR MEALS, as skipping a meal will lower your metabolic rate. Hunger makes you edgy and snappy.
SHARE YOUR FEELINGS with someone you trust such as
your spouse, sister, mother or best friend. Whether it’s something small
such as having swollen hands and feet or a fear that your baby may not
be growing well, talking it over with someone will release tension and
help you see the problem in a different perspective. Cry it out if you
have to.
LOOK GOOD to feel good. Shop for pretty maternity
clothes that make you feel more confident about your new life adventure
as a mommy. It’s hard to feel happy when you’ve outgrown all your
existing clothes and feel uncomfortable about meeting people with a
protruding abdomen.
BE KNOWLEDGEABLE about pregnancy and birth. Knowing
what to expect lowers anxiety levels and makes you less likely to be
irritated by the changes in your body. Apart from books, websites and
information brochures, talk to experienced moms who can share a wealth
of knowledge with you!
IF YOU SUSPECT YOU’RE DEPRESSED, speak to your
doctor about it as it can affect the way you handle the pregnancy and
birth. The classic symptoms of depression are extreme sadness,
difficulty sleeping, eating, concentrating, or making decisions. You
also appear to lose interest in work and play. Untreated ante-natal
depression also may lead to post-natal depression.

Ladies who have been pregnant… what signs did you show at 2 months? I’m 2 months pregnant and just found out, because I haven’t shown many signs until about a week ago… now it’s full on… I’m noticing the baby bump, and I feel nauseous, and I’m noticing a lot of mood swings. I snap at my husband, Patrick, a lot, but immediately feel bad, because he never does anything but help me out and he’s just the sweetest. Also, I’ve had a bit of morning sickness, but not much, and I’m so tired. Is this all normal at two months? Are the mood swings most likely going to get worse? I feel bad, because it’s causing my husband a lot of stress… He gets the brunt of it, and I can see it in his eyes when I snap… He’s already freaking out (He’s excited, of course, but super nervous.), and I feel like I’m makin g it worse. In your experiences, how were the mood swings during your pregnancy? Do they get worse??

I never was this bitchcy before I was pregnant but now Im a monster. Everytime I get mad at him he gets mad at me also. I told him that he needs to cooperate with me, but he says he’s not used to this. We dont live together right now, so when we argue its over the phone. When we get together we are very happy. We just cant stop arguing over the phone. How did your significant other handle your mood swings? I dont want him to get fed up and leave me. How should this be handled?
Also, we argue about stupid things. How did you get your significant other to deal with your mood swings?

My husband and I recently found out we were pregnant and shortly after that we got married. I have always loved him and always thought we were ment for each other but recently I am having these feelings of uncertanty. I am not sure if I want to stay married to him. Can I really live with him my whole life? I also feel a lot of resentment towards him and recently everything he does gets on my nerves. Is this a normal pragnancy feeling or am I really having feelings of not wanting to be married? It seems a little extreem but I do love him. But up until now I am feeling an estranged relationship with him and I am questioning the level of our relationship and hurting for my freedom back. I hope this is normal because I really want and pray for this to work out. We are 8 weeks along. Someone please help me!

My mood swings are so out of control. And my boyfriend is on the verge of breaking up with me because he says I yell at him ALL THE TIME and that I [B * I * T * C * H] ALL THE TIME and that I treat him like [S * H * I * T] all of the time. And what he doesnt understand is that its both of us right now not “JUST ME”! he its quitting smoking right now so he is in a shitty mood also! and he is under stress right now tooo! he is working, going to school, paying all the bill, making sure that we get to our appointments and things and he is just in a grumpy mood too! We argued alot today and he says that if I dont change VERY soon that he is going to break up with me. And that were going to have joint custody of our child. And he says he wants to work things out and he wants us to be together. But i am trying to explain to him that I dont mean to be this way and I am sorry its because of pregnancy hormones but now he says that I have used that as an exuse WAY too many times already!
and he really does try to deal with it, but its just so out of control right now i dont know what i can do to control myself. and he just told me that hes not going to break up with me he just says that cuz he thinks maybe if I hear it that i’ll change. but what he doesnt understand is that I REALL CANT conrol myself when I yell and get mad over stupid stuff. and I wish I didnt get like this but thats part of pregnancy. I dont maybe just some advice on how to get through this or if there is somthing that we can do??? i dont know, thanks

My Significant other and me have been on the “out’s” since last night. He does not seem to think my mood swings are normal. I’m 3 months preggo, and I cry for no reason, the food he loves to make repulses me and it gets to him. He accused me of not loving my baby or wanting it because I don’t seem happy enough. He claims I am the only woman he knows that’s having such a hard time! I have been puking for 3 months non-stop..yes I’m a bit miserable. I’ve lost over 20 pounds and the stress is really starting to get to me. (Luckily, I did gain 3 pounds and that pleased the doctor and me!) Now my Boyfriend is twisting my words around. One day I told him my Best Friend wants to babysit for a few days when the baby is old enough-toddler age. His interpretation: ‘I’m so unhappy with the pregnancy, I want to dump the baby on other people!” What gives? I hear it’s normal to have mood swings and all, but is it normal for your mate to totally misread everything you do?

I am just about 5 weeks pregnant and experiencing terrible mood swings. I feel irritable and emotional at all times. Household chores that I did without much effort earlier now seem huge, every annoying habit of my husband that was under my tolerance level once is now driving me mad, i feel like crying almost all day and my head is filled with negative thoughts. I know stress is a big no no during pregnancy although i cant help but feel loaded with it. My husband’s focus seems to be everything but my baby’s or my wellbeing. If I am yelling coz am tired of repeating the same old instructions to the workers – he yells back at me and makes nasty remarks, if I talk about the things that make me stressed – he calls me a whiner or a complaint box, if I cry coz am low or depressed – he terms me a drama queen! I feel so angered and helpless. I dont want to do anything that could harm my baby but cant keep the stress at bay no matter what.
Any suggestions on what I can ask my husband to do (not that am sure he will do it) to be more supportive or what I can do to make the situation better for me n my baby?? Thanks

I’m almost 27 weeks pregnant. I realized yesterday that I am becoming more and more moody, rapidly cycling from high to low to angry… really running the whole gambit.

I’m exercising throughout the week, doing something I enjoy. I’m watching what I eat, how much, and when. I’m getting adequate amounts of sleep (though it’s starting to feel like I need a LOT more…). It’s to the point that I threw a tantrum yesterday in front of my family. I’m terribly embarrassed. I don’t enjoy behaving this way. I just… I didn’t actually realize that it was happening until it was done.

I’m grateful for any thoughts on the subject.
